Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
